Event Date:
Monday, July 4, 2022 - 21:00 to 23:00 EDT

Stellarium intermediate course (ONLINE)

Monday 4 July 2022

7:00 PM to 9:00 PM Mountain time

Stellarium is a powerful planetarium application available for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux computers.

Participants will learn how to load additional catalogues, customise the application including setting up specific locations, load new comets, modify the toolbar, choose landscape textures, use stepping zooming, copy object information, configure eyepiece and camera views, and slew a telescope mount to a target. This will provide an amateur astronomer a deeper understanding of the Stellarium program.

FOR MEMBERS ONLY.

Class sizes are limited. A waiting list is maintained for when courses are full.

Abstract: In recent years, the world's largest and most powerful telescopes have started to identify high redshift galaxies in the early Universe, up to a time when it was less than a billion years old. This is an important epoch in the history and evolution of the Universe, marking the time where the first stars and galaxies were forming out of primordial gas from the Big Bang. These observations have led to a great deal of progress in investigating high redshift galaxies, however, they have failed to solve many mysteries due to observational challenges in observing these distant objects. This talk discusses what is currently known and unknown about high redshift galaxies, and some possible breakthroughs that could be made with the James Webb Space Telescope.

Speaker bio: Sunna is a first year MSc student at York University studying high redshift galaxies with the James Webb Space Telescope. This currently involves using simulated JWST observations to predict ways to find high redshift galaxies in data that will be collected during the telescope's first year of observations. Once data has been collected, these predictions will be applied to the JWST observations to find high redshift galaxies.
