Frank Sisman

Hamilton Centre telescope maker. Chant Medal 1949.

FRANK SISMAN ( - 1960) joined the Hamilton Centre in 1935 and soon earned a reputation as an optical craftsman. By the time he received the Chant Medal for 1949, he had made five telescopes, many eyepieces, optical fiats, a machine for grinding and polishing mirrors and a testing bench. His finished work was consistently of the very highest standard. Frank Sisman was always a very willing adviser to other amateur telescope-makers and did much to advance public interest in astronomy.

Unfortunately he suffered a stroke in the summer of 1949 and was still unable to attend the annual meeting the following year to receive the medal in person. He was apparently in ill health for the rest of his life.
