Candidate 2 - Paul Gray, Halifax Centre

It is with pride that I can say I have been a member of the RASC for 25 years, having joined as a youth at the age of 15. The RASC to me is more then just a club, it is an extended family that shares a passion and love of the night sky and one in which I am proud to be a member.

In my time with the RASC I have been active in outreach on the front lines to working behind the scenes on various committees or task. As a youth member I learned the ropes of the centre level in Halifax where I served for several years as the Centre’s observing chairman and led the organizing of Nova East Star Party for a couple years.

While I left Canada to work in the United States I was a member of two other clubs, the Delmarva Stargazers and the York Astronomical Society. Active in both clubs in outreach and newsletter editor of the latter I gained some interesting ideas and experience.

Upon returning to Canada I became member of the RASC New Brunswick Centre for a period of 8 years. There I helped a young centre grow and become what to this day I consider one of the best astronomy groups around! I served as Vice President and President and editor of the news letter for a time as well. My work behind the scenes in the New Brunswick Centre was laying the ground work for the certification of Mount Carleton and Kouchibouac Dark Sky Preserves. With the help of a great team I chaired the 2010 General Assembly which was a huge success.

On the National level during my time as a New Brunswick member, I also served as a National Council representative. This in turn led me to become in 2007 part of the Board Pilot Committee. As a member of this board my role was to work as liaison to the Observing Committee which later that year I would become chair of until 2010 when officially I would step down at the General Assembly.

In 2012 after a well needed break I would once again become involved at the national level by becoming current editor of the RASC National Calendar. This has proven very rewarding and enjoyable.

Outside the RASC I have a wonderful wife of 15 years who has supported my hobby and four wonderful children, two of which are now hunting supernovae and taking interest in club activities. I work as a Civil CAD Technician and through work have been fortunate to been trained in ISO 9001 and Dale Carnegie growth courses which helped improve working relations and skills.

I have often looked back at my 25 years in the RASC and felt I have been given so much and enjoy giving back to this large family. It is through our strength in numbers and wide ranges of skills that we can grow as a whole and individually as I have been fortunate to do. I would like bring forth my experience and passion for the RASC and help guide it through this time of transition by being a member of the new board. I ask for your support!
