Named in memory of Edward S. Holden (1846-1914), first director of the Lick Observatory and founder of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
Name proposed by F. K. Edmondson in the ASP’s centennial year and one year after the centennial of the Lick Observatory.
The asteroid (872) Holda was also dedicated in memory of Professor Holden in an archaic style common before the development of the Minor Planet Center in Cincinnati in 1947 by Paul Herget.
Holden was named an Honorary Member of the Astronomical and Physical Society of Toronto on 1891-11-03.
