                   THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY OF CANADA

                           COMET AND NOVA SECTION

             A SPECIAL NOTICE TO THE VICTORIA CENTRE AND VANCOUVER CENTRE



       Observers near the west coast of Canada will be will placed for a

possible evening observation of the Tail of Comet Ikeya-Seki on October 20.

Although it is not possible to predict the length of the tail, it is

not unlikely that it could be over 40,000,000 miles long. The following

times for Vancouver and Victoria are for "Tail-Set" assuming a length of

0.4 Astronomical Units, and pointing directly away from the sun.



         Victoria:

                     Sunset:  17:17 P.S.T.

                  Tail Sets:  18:55 P.S.T.



         Vancouver:

                     Sunset:  17:15 P.S.T.

                  Tail sets:  18:50 P.S.T.



	This pert of the tail will be 24° from the sun. It is possible

that the comet will be bright enough for daytime observation on the after-

noon of October 20, and it may break up about this time.
