Gliding Along The Teapot’s Steam

Undoubtedly the mega topic in the media and water cooler these days are the remarkable images beamed back from Pluto. The mission started on January 19, 2006 with the launch of the New Horizon spacecraft. Weighing 478 kg and about the size of a baby grand piano, the stage was set for its nine and a half year flight.

The RASC’s Nocturnal Preserve designation, part of the Dark Sky Preserve Program, is the newest of three RASC designations that aim to promote the protection of quality night sky and minimize light pollution. The RASC also awards the Dark Sky Preserve and the Urban Star Park designations. NCC’s OMB Ranch is among the first in Canada to be designated a Nocturnal Preserve.

The Board of Directors of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) are pleased to announce that the RASC has purchased SkyNews Incorporated.

SkyNews Inc. has published SkyNews magazine since 1999.  SkyNews Inc. also owns SkyNews.ca and  publishes a monthly e-newsletter.  SkyNews is the Canadian magazine for amateur astronomers and is the only popular, English-language science magazine for adults published in Canada.

Scorpius and The Planet Saturn

The constellation Scorpius is a classic summer time pattern in the southern sky. This month it is well above the horizon when the sky is dark. A perfect silhouette of a scorpion is witnessed by its claws and the reddish star Antares; however we lose part of its tail from our latitude. But all is not lost as the pair of stinger stars finds its way above the horizon. As mentioned the jewel is Antares aka the heart of the Scorpion.
