The astronomical community welcomes a new book on variable stars by the RASC's most esteemed expert on the subject, Dr. John Percy. Understanding Variable Stars (ISBN 9780521232531) was published this spring by Cambridge University Press. In Dr. Percy's own words:

Two well-known members of the Society - Dr. Rajiv Gupta (Unattached) and Bruce McCurdy (Edmonton) will receive the Society's Service Award in 2007 in recognition of their exemplary efforts on behalf of the Society. These awards will be presented at the Society's General Assembly in Calgary later this month.

Thanks to RASC volunteers, Astronomy Week and International Astronomy Day 2007 put stars in the eyes of astronomers and others across the country. While the eastern half of the country enjoyed clear skies, clouds over the prairies and the west coast did not dampen enthusiasm for indoor exhibits and presentations.

RASC members from Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa, Kitchener-Waterloo and Niagara are being featured in the tenth annual CONTACT photography festival which opens today in Toronto. A total of 20 outstanding astroimages, selected by SkyNews Editor Terence Dickinson, will be on display in the Great Hall of the Ontario Science Centre until May 31st. A special presentation focusing on astrophotography is planned as part of the official opening on May 9th.

The Niagara Centre is hosting their annual banquet on Saturday, April 14th, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. onwards. All RASC members are encouraged to take in this exciting event that will feature Paul Delaney of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at York University.

Long-time RASC member David Levy has discovered another comet visually near Saturn in the pre-dawn sky as reported by the Central Bureau of Astronomical Telegrams (circular 8757). David Levy is a life member of the Society attached to the Kingston Centre and also serves as their Honorary President. Congratulations!

Saturday, July 29, was the tenth annual star night at the Pinery Provincial Park, located on the Lake Huron shore about 70km northwest of London. With 1000 campsites, Pinery is one of the largest of Ontario's overnight parks. 18 RASC London Centre members participated and there were 13 telescopes set up. A crowd of about 700 sat on the benches in the park Amphitheatre to hear RASC London Centre president Dave McCarter give an illustrated talk called "Tour the Summer Milky Way."
