Event Date: Tuesday, May 11, 2021 - 15:30 to 17:00 EDT Insider's Guide to the Galaxy: Galaxies in Plain Sight
It's New Moon time! Usually to find galaxies you have to carefully study a star chart, point your telescope at the right patch of sky, and then try to see and focus on a fuzzy patch amid total blackness. But Chris has a trick up his sleeve! He’ll be helping us easily find galaxies using nextdoor-neighbour stars that guide us right to them. Bring a notebook; you’ll want to go out observing right after this session!

Event Date: Friday, May 14, 2021 - 22:00 to 23:45 EDT May 2021 Speaker: Ray Kostaschuk
RASC Sunshine Coast
Topic: Rivers of the Solar System
"A river is a channel system constructed by naturally flowing liquids moving towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. Rivers create diverse drainage patterns and a stunning variety of erosional and depositional landforms that provide important clues to the climate and geological framework of the landscape. Active rivers flow on Earth and Titan and ancient rivers are common on Mars and Venus. Rivers on the rocky planets are created by water flowing over rock or sediment but on Titan the rivers consist of liquid hydrocarbons eroding a crust of water ice."
This talk will take place on Zoom Friday, May 14th, 2021 @ 7 pm PDT (10 pm EDT)
Ray Kostaschuk, a geoscientist specializing in sedimentary processes in rivers, lakes and estuaries. He was a Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Guelph for 25 years. He is currently an Adjunct Professor in the School of Environmental Science at SFU where he works with Professor Jeremy Venditti and graduate students on sedimentation in the Fraser River.

Victoria are joining forces to host a celebration of International Astronomy Day on Friday, May 15th, 2021 from 7
pm to 11 pm PDT (10 pm - 2 am EDT).
Our guest speaker, Dr Kim Venn, Professor of Astronomy and Director of the Astronomy Research

dinosaur bones but very old stars that give us clues to the formation of the galaxy billions of years ago.
We have the best of all worlds: solar telescope streaming early in the evening, night sky EAA
(Electronically Assisted Astronomy) as the sky gets darker and live views of the deep sky from the
historic Plaskett Telescope at the DAO.
There will be virtual tours of the DAO and Centre of the Universe and a live-streamed tour of the
Telescope facilities at the University of Victoria. We also have special presentations of “Ask an
Astronomer (or two)” and an Astrophotography Gallery with images taken by local RASC members with
accompanying music from our famous a capella choir, Vox Humana. Add in a Planetarium show and it
will be a complete evening filled with lots of entertainment and astronomical discoveries.

Event Date: Wednesday, May 19, 2021 - 19:30 to 21:00 EDT Speaker's Night: What is DUNE? Embark on the underground telescope to pierce the secrets of matter! (ONLINE)
Wednesday, May 19, 2021 - 7:30pm to 9:00pm
Speaker: Dr. Claire David, Assistant Professor, Physics and Astronomy, York University; Associate Scientist, Fermilab
The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international project dedicated to studying a mysterious particle called the neutrino. They are one of the most abundant elements in the cosmos, yet they barely interact with matter. Trillions are going through your body every second (harmlessly).
Physicists are very curious about the shy neutrinos as this particle alone could help us understand our entire Universe, especially solving a century old mystery: “Why, after the Big Bang, did matter overtake antimatter?”

Event Date: Thursday, May 20, 2021 - 21:30 to 23:30 EDT Earth & Beyond: Young Stars amid External Radiation and Colliding Clusters
Presented by Alexandra Yep
RASC Calgary
Stars are not born in isolation. Rather, they are born in a cluster of a hundred or even a thousand stars. Star clusters, meanwhile, are not alone either. In galaxies like ours, many of them form in the spiral arms. One may well ask: Do stars affect neighbouring stars? Do clusters affect neighboring clusters? They certainly do. Hot stars can irradiate nearby young stars and prevent them from forming planets. Clusters can collide with each other, such that stars pass through the edges of each other's solar systems and kick up comets and asteroids. It's tough to be a planet out there.
Alexandra Yep is a poet turned astronomer. Her first science course in college was quantum mechanics, and by some miracle she passed the course and kept on going. She is now pursuing her Ph.D. at Georgia State University, researching young stars in a moderate radiation environment and the collision of star clusters. She is on track to graduate this year.
