International Year of Astronomy Appeal
The International Year of Astronomy is off to an amazing start, thanks to RASC members all across the country! You have probably heard of, or participated in, an IYA event with your local RASC Centre but you may not know what an amazing success IYA has already been across Canada.
People in communities from sea to sea to sea — from young children to elderly neighbours, people from all walks of life have thrilled to look through a telescope for the first time, or discover fascinating facts about the Universe. Remember the very first time you were struck by the wonders of astronomy? IYA, and the RASC, are bringing this wonder to unprecedented numbers of Canadians.
Here are some of their comments:
- "The setup was totally awesome, can't wait for this year in astronomy!"
- "My favourite Galileo Moment was when I went on a field trip and we watched a video about space travel that made us feel like we were actually moving. It was really cool!"
- "I participated in watching Venus move across the night skies for almost a week in my grandpa’s telescope"
- "An extraordinary viewing of Venus through a magnificent 7-inch scope. I just happened upon this event during a visit to Walmart in Miramichi. The event hosts were very friendly, professional, and more than willing to answer any questions. I thank them and the RASC for the Galileo Moment. P.S. First time I enjoyed a trip to Walmart!"
Thanks in large part to the response of our members to the International Year of Astronomy Appeal, the RASC has produced a series of beautiful educational materials that are available at no cost to every one of our 29 Centres. These materials are so successful, and so popular, that we cannot keep up with the demand! We are getting new orders every day from universities, public schools, libraries, parks, Scout and Guide troops – everybody wants them!!
Donations are still being accepted to the IYA Appeal and will go directly towards putting these wonderful materials in the hands of schoolchildren and viewing enthusiasts across Canada. These materials engage, and educate, and fascinate; they also provide a legacy for the RASC because people will keep them for years to come, and will know that they were produced by the RASC.
