To the President and executive:
As the result of recent events, which, after due and thoughtful consideration on my part I can characterize as nothing else than a species of persecution on account of nonconformity to the dogmas of science, culminating in the summary expulsion from this society of one of our members, who had been duly elected, and whose fee had been accepted in good faith—I feel unable any longer to retain the portfolio which you so kindly entrusted to my care and keeping. I hereby repudiate all executive responsibility for, or in, the above transaction. I do not by this act withdraw from the society as a private member, unless full sympathy with the expelled member should be deemed sufficient reason for depriving me also of the benefits to be derived from connexion with this learned body.
